On the 21st September, Year 5 had the opportunity to meet a Viking called Eric. During the morning, we learnt, from Eric, about what the Vikings wore, how their families were structured and how we know this from artefacts which have been found. After lunch, we found out about crime and punishment, what type of weapons were used, (we even got to touch these!) and try on some of the helmets. A fantastic day was ended with both classes reciting a war chant at each other. If you want to hear them, then visit Year 5 if you dare!
“I think the Vikings were very fashionable as they wore lots of jewellery. I enjoyed putting all of it on! They were very talented people to be able to make the brooches.” – Samuel 5D
“I enjoyed watching Eric make the coins. He got a metal tube then put another metal tube inside. There was also a cylinder which was decorated at the end. When it was hammered, it made a coin.” – Riley 5S
I was surprised to find out that the Vikings didn’t actually wear horns on their helmets. Also they used tools differently than we do today.” – David 5S
“I though Vikings were violent however I discovered they were also gentle because I saw the artefacts to prove it.” – Kian 5D
