Year 2 have been working with a writer and illustrator and have created an original storybook for early years readers to enjoy. We asked them to create a story that reflected some of our school values and a feisty breakdancing spider was born in their imagination. The story was created using traditional story telling techniques where the children acted out the story as they created the narrative. This interactive approach enabled every child in the class to invent and take on a role. Creative chaos ensued but the children were delighted with the outcome as they saw their ideas and illustrations come to life. The important themes of friendship, risk taking and being prepared to ‘go with the flow’ are just some of the messages linked to our school values that the children wanted to reflect in the story. This innovative work was part of a wider whole school creative learning project and the central character, our breakdancing spider became the inspiration for a sculptural installation in our school grounds…..but thats another story!
